Young Joseph, Count de Mazeray , is said to have left his homeland to emigrate to the United States in the early 1850s. After hearing about gold deposits in California, he invested his savings in an expedition. After many years of hunting, searching, and doubt, he finally struck gold and made his fortune. Upon his return to France, wherever he went, he was asked to recount his adventures, worthy of the tales of the most famous explorers. When the Count visited his relatives and friends and attended parties, he never returned empty-handed. With a wink, he offered gifts that all contained gold. Some were traditional objects made unique, while others were completely new, like his Cognac enriched with gold particles. All were designed to enchant high society in search of new sensations.
