Young Joseph, Count of Mazeray , is said to have left his native country to emigrate to the United States in the early 1850s. After hearing about gold deposits in California, he invested his savings in going on an expedition. After many years of hunting, searching and doubting, he finally found gold and made his fortune. On his return to France, wherever he went, he was asked to recount his adventures, worthy of the stories of the most famous explorers. When the Count visited his relatives and friends and attended parties, he never returned empty-handed. With a wink, he gave gifts that all contained gold. Some were traditional objects made unique, while others were completely new like his Cognac enriched with gold particles. All were designed to delight high society in search of new sensations.
